Erick Brenes came from a brood of Poker players. Among the Costa Rican brothers who made waves in the gambling world, Erick was the underachiever. His older brothers Humberto, tagged as the Godfather of Cost Rican Players and Alex, a World Poker Tour champion have created a dynasty that was supposedly strengthen with Erick's entry. And it did!
Although short of citations from tournament organizers, Erick was able to purse generous amount of earnings from playing consistently at high stake events. This is where he had fared better than his brothers -- in pursing jackpots. At the 2004 WPT for example, Erick was able to bring home a whopping $1 million cold cash at the No Limit Hold'em Table. That was quite remarkable considering that Alex only managed to take home six-digit prize as his biggest at the previous WPT events he went into.
Unluckily, playing at live tournaments is not Erick's cup o' tea. He is more inclined towards farming, tending crops and cultivating livestocks. Playing at the Poker table is what he does to wile away his time with the added bonus of earning impressive jackpots. He is more comfortable at his home town and country, San Jose, Costa Rica, and would usually come out to play when there is an interesting event.
The Breneses are known movers in the industry, nevertheless. Their witty decisions at the game table are sourced from a well of information they worked hard for to learn about. It started with the old Humberto who studied in a professional school to make his entry to the Poker world a decent one. Yes, most of his learnings are based on his own experience but you cannot possibly discount the fact that everything started in school. His learnings are combined with observation and experience in order to make a killing at every final table he was in. All of those were passed on to his younger siblings who gladly obliged to the invitation. Both Alex and Erick were able to create a place for themselves in the Poker circuit. Theirs may not be as brightly shining as Humberto's but they are both part of the dynasty that started decades ago.
For many, Erick should be honing his Poker skills rather than his faming skills. They think he would be better cultivating playing cards than any of his crops. Because the talent and the eye for winning is there. What's lacking is actually the time that he will lend to actually sit at the table and best other players towards the jackpot.
