Past Posting in Poker

When you want to join a poker game, the casino or the online poker room usually requires you to post the big blind if you want to be dealt in the next hand. However, posting big blinds is an optional move and you can always wait for your turn to become the big blind.

Waiting for your turn takes a long time, sometimes as long as 15 minutes in land-based casinos, so many players opt to post right away. Is this a correct strategy?

If you enter a game in the middle of play, it is advisable to bide your time. Waiting will allow you to observe the players at the table and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Waiting will also give you valuable time to prepare mentally and emotionally for the game.

In online poker games, you can choose to post the big blind immediately or to wait for it. Should you wait for the big blind or post right away?

The answer is neither. Instead of waiting or posting immediately, you can wait until the button passes you by before you enter the game. This way, you have now posted the big blind in a late position, giving you an advantage of coming late before the flop.

Being in a late position gives you the advantage because you have several hands until the next blind comes along. You can also opt to raise or check during your turn.

This strategy is useful when you enter a new online poker game. Land-based casinos will not allow you to wait for the button to pass, but you can do it after taking short breaks.

The perfect time to take a break from the game is when you're going to be under the gun just before you become the big blind. Don't take a break when you are in a late position because you don't want to give up the advantage of being in the best position. Take a break only when you are in the worst position and return after the button has passed.

In casinos and card rooms, you are require to post big blinds and forfeit a small blind if you miss our blinds. In this situation, you can fold your small blind. In online poker rooms, you are not required to forfeit a small blind. You can also post the big blind after the button has passed.

The "past posting" technique is a good strategy you can use if you take frequent breaks in the game. However, it will not shift the odds totally in your favor, but it can give you a significant advantage in the long run.
